There are no winners in war; never have been. Many have lost those they dearly love. I am reminded of this other love letter, written during the American Civil War.
Take a moment to hug those whom you love; be grateful, and cherish that which you have.
Sullivan Ballou’s letter to Sarah has not left my mind since I first heard it on Ken Burns’ documentary so many years ago. It is maybe the most beautiful letter I have ever heard (and read).
I knew the actor who read Sullivan Ballou’s letter….I always thought that it was one of the finest moments in his career…A very great and unforgettable letter, read with such simplicity and yet so much feeling, by Paul Roebling.

The first video made me cry. I shall try to follow her example.
