My Town Monday: The Village Was Alive With the Sounds of Music

Elements Gallery, Peninsula, OH

The sounds of music were everywhere in the Village of Peninsula, population 602, on Saturday, September 25. The 2nd Annual Music on the Porches event was indeed a success. There was music on porches, on stages, on patios and, for us, in the front window of the gallery.

We were lucky to host the amazingly talented  Galgozy/Zeleny Duo , followed by a wonderful young blues guitarist, Paul Korbus.   Dale and Adreanne played a variety of tunes, both original and those that are old friends. If I had remembered to charge the battery on my camera, I would have a video to share; instead enjoy this sample of their music. Galgozy/Zeleny Duo Perform at Elements Gallery, Peninsula, OH

Take a look of some more photos from the day.

It was clear to me that there is a reason we call it “playing music.”  The musicians played, and the listeners joined in by tapping their feet, nodding their heads, and smiling.

As always, feel free to leave me a comment, or a stone (o), to let me know you stopped by.

Live! On Our Porch

A couple of years ago, I read about a town that had an event where folks played music on their porches throughout the town.  Businesses and private residences hosted musical events.   Steve and I talked about it, and the idea was presented to the other merchants in the Village of Peninsula, population 602.  Music on the Porches was born.

On Saturday, September 25, music will be heard throughout the Village, in the beautiful Cuyahoga Valley. We are delighted to once again host the Galgozy and Zeleny Duo.   According to their website:

Galgozy/Zeleny Duo“Galgozy/Zeleny Duo is a wonderful fusion of original songs and traditional styles. Forming in 2008, the duo from the beginning has been in demand for their lilting and progressive sound. This duet is fast becoming a recognized musical experience.

The 35-year difference in their ages is in itself unusual, but the common musical interests they share spans decades of American folk art. Their original songs balance words and melody, songs that have a high degree of creativity and spontaneity – no doubt why folks of all ages are coming to see these two very talented and imaginative musicians. As they weave their ever-expanding repertoire, they bridge the ever-widening cultural gap and leave a memorable musical impression and a sense of community.

Dale Galgozy is a master traditional musician, songwriter and a guitarist of many styles, including fingerstyle-blues, jazz-swing, rock and folk. A skilled vocalist and arranger, Dale Galgozy is a full time professional musician and a dedicated guitar teacher. Performing throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New York and Indiana since 1987 and an Ohio Arts Council recipient from 1994-2006, his progressive contemporary acoustic music has traditional roots and yet is free and playful.

Adreanne Zeleny is one of Northeast Ohio’s young creative talents, a master of various guitar styles, including fingerstyle-blues, folk and rock and a superb songwriter, session player and bassist. Adreanne Zeleny invents symphonic lines that complement every song and reflect a high degree of devotion to the music she creates.

These two artists are beyond any preconception of contemporary folk music. With the virtuosity found in classical music, the freedom of jazz and the straightforward vocals of traditional music, their artistic achievements are not to be taken lightly.”

Dale and Adreanne will be playing on our porch, Elements Gallery, from 1-3pm. They will be followed by Paul Kolbus, a 10 year old blues guitarist. Paul is passionate about his music and will be making his Music on the Porches debut at 4pm.  We are excited to host these musicians.  If you’re in our neck of the woods, stop by and see us. And check out who will be playing at the various locations in the Village. Follow this link .

A Good Book Finds a New Home

Cuyahoga Valley bookA week or so ago, I wrote a post about the Ohio and Erie Canal.  I offered a drawing for a beautiful book about my Valley, the Cuyahoga. Then I forgot. So, without further ado (insert drumroll, please), the winner is Mary Whitsell.  If you haven’t visited her blog, Resident Alien, please do.  Mary is an extraordinary storyteller, who weaves words into an heirloom tapestry.   Tell Mary, I sent you.
