Words. They have power. I love the sound of them, how, when chosen with care they flow as they tell a story. So when I saw a Word-a-Day calendar at my local discount store, I put it in the cart.
Some of the words are familiar, others are new to me. They all do their job, describing and enriching my life. Here are a few from the pages that are on my wall:
**fissiparous: adj: tending to break up into parts: divisive
**perspicuous: adj: plain to the understanding especially because of clarity and precision of presentation
**quaggy: adj: marshy, flabby
These are fine words, but my favorite, so far, is this:
**Cloud cuckoo land: noun: an unrealistically idealistic state where everything is perfect.
Stay tuned. The year is young, and there are many more pages of the calendar on my wall.
Love this although I take umbrage at the definition of “cloud cuckoo land.” Just because idealistic states are perfect doesn’t mean they’re unrealistic!
BTW, you might like the board game, “Balderdash.” Entertaining and educational. I have many hysterical memories because of that game & now I know that “squitters” is a good replacement for the word “diarrhea.”
Love ‘quaggy’ not least because of its Scrabble potential. My mother used to use the term ‘cloud cuckoo land’ with alarming regularity, according to her it was my homeland!
A memory from my student days, Pisthetaeros, a character in a play by Aristophanes, He persuades the birds to create a city in the sky, where they’ll be more civilised than the people of athens, and will also challenge the gods. It all works out about as well as you might expect. Mind you, two thousand year-old jokes do tend to fall a bit flat.

Ohhhhh. I am kerflummoxed by words. I’m always searching for the one I need to complete a thought. Why must they hide from me?
Debra, do you subscribe to Anu Garg’s Word-a-Day? I <3 Anu.
PS One thing I really didn't need or want: another word for flabby.
