The Python Has Landed: A My Town Monday Post (with a Mug Shot on the Side)

Who’d a thunk I’d be spending hours editing photos of a festival that commemorates a reptile. Me. Of all people. Who jumps when a wee little snake is seen in the garden.

The Village of Peninsula, population 601, enjoys its celebrations. From the Quarry clean up day, to the 4th of July, to Peddlers’ Day, to Christmas in Peninsula. We know how to celebrate. And the 55th anniversary of the sightings of the Peninsula is no exception. If you want to read more about the Python, slither on over here.

As promised, here is a video of this year’s Python Festival. And I have a new skill: I uploaded it to You Tube!

If you are unable to see the video here, click on this link.

And the winner of my high tech contest (where I drew a name from a hat) for one of our favorite mugs is Rudeek. She will be receiving a mug in the mail soon.  Thanks to all who posted comments and sent mug shots :-)

My Town Monday was started by Travis Erwin.    Travis has retired from the MTM helm, and has passed the torch to Clair Dickson. She has created a blog just for MTM, where she posts links to bloggers who write about their towns hither and yon.

I’m so excited about the mug! Thank you and your high tech ways. I’m going to make sure I buy a lottery ticket this week too-just in case I’m on a hot streak.

I loved the video. Did you edit on your mac then put it on YouTube? Some of your pictures have that Ken Burns effect. I like it. The snakes look harmless enough…

Reptiles don’t usually generate much love. Good for Peninsula

Maybe it’s just that I like reptiles as a class, but I LOVE this story, and what a great excuse for a summer festival. Your slide show is great! All these cute snakes about town made me want to slither on down myself for the fun! And that it was a tricky circus snake that escaped- well, that only adds to the romance of the tail : )

Great video, I love the clever ideas your townsfolk have come up with. I think my favourite is the driftwood though.

With each celebration, you are becoming more technological!

I think snakes are beautiful! Though I might not react with pleasure if I found one in my garden shed, I’d still admire it from a distance. A lot of town festivals commemorate battles and wars; one that honors a python makes a nice change.

I enjoyed the little video, what a nice festival.

My mind, as minds are wont to do, juxtaposed your story with the situation in Florida, particularly South Florida and the Everglades. Burmese, and perhaps other, pythons have become a problem. They are happily populating the sub-tropics of Florida, and are a major threat to native wildlife (they even eat alligators, among other things). The State of Florida has basically declared war on them.

This problem is, as usual, caused by humans. People get a python for a pet, it gets too big, and they release it into the wild. I believe they should be outlawed as pets, with fines for both sellers and buyers.
