Porcelain Tiles

A couple of weeks ago, I had posted some small tiles in process here. Those pieces have been glazed and fired.

Dragonfly

Leaf

Iris

These small pieces, that measure about 4.5″ x 4.5″, give me the opportunity to experiment with different carving and glazing combinations and techniques. I like the intimacy of working on a small scale, and the challenge of creating dimension on a flat surface.

Today I continued working on the bigger triptychs. I’ll post more images as they are available.

I like these. It’s like a garden, but in tile.

All those small strokes — step-by-step — add up to one beautiful design, Debra.

I LOVE those! And I echo what Cat B says: they remind me a little of Oribe-yaki in Japan, especially the ones with the grass stalks painted on them.

Thank you all for you most kind words. The designs are carved into wet clay; then they are fired to about 1700 degreesF. Colorants are then inlaid into the carved areas, the excess is removes, the the glaze is applied over it. The piece is then fired.

I feel like a gardener, rudeek.
I have an affinity to Oriental design, Cat. I like the proportion, and composition, the way all the elements move through space.
I will have to look up Oribe-yaki, Mary.

I have to agree with Cat on the Oriental feel to them. But goodness, they are all lovely. Wonderful job! I love seeing your handiwork.
