The arts absolutely include literature and music. Dance, too. We do the best we can with the tools we have at any given time. And. Hope. For. The. Best.

The few things I really treasure are handmade, whether pottery, paintings, jewelry, or knitted sweaters. I may discard other things, but those handmade things stay with me year after year. And I’d definitely include literature and music too.

Indeed, and well said. Sometimes there is SO. MUCH. BEAUTY. that it hurts to not be able to capture it all (whether through photos, videos, words, etc) and show everyone.

We artists know that life really is good. Maybe everyone should practice an art—I do think it would help, especially in tough times. Art is such a great teacher!

Sage words. I think artists are much more accustomed to a different set of priorities than most of the rest of us that economic times like this seem less frightening. I have learned much from Scott about paring the world down to just those things that we really need to make us happy and I’ve found that we don’t really need much. But of the material things we do have, if I prize anything, it is the art that we’ve surrounded ourselves with. For people who’ve never bought an original painting, sculpture, pottery, drawing, etc. before, I recommend trying it. You’ll be amazed at how much joy these pieces bring and the only thing you have to know about art is what you’re drawn to and what appeals to you. Buy art. It’s good for the soul.
