My Town Monday: In a Word: COLD

Bird

We got 6 inches of new snow yesterday—on top of the 18+ inches that already blanket the ground. Last week’s respite from the cold, a balmy 40 degrees F, a promise of spring, is now a sweet memory. I know that under all this snow, nature is working her yearly miracle.

The birds know it, too. Spring songs cut through the cold air, punctuating the silence with their glorious sounds. The goldfinches are back—early this year—and are already showing hints of yellow. It’s hard to keep the feeders filled since the whole neighborhood seems to know that dinner is always served here.

The chickens are aware that the seasons are changing, too; they are laying again, and their eggs are a welcome addition to our larder.

The quality of the light has changed; the sun rises more toward the south. The willows have the golden cast that precedes Spring’s arrival.

I am still cold, and have been for months, it seems. The weather report is for more of the same, with snow. But we are at the half way mark for winter. It is good, yes?

Here’s a welcome back to Travis Erwin, My Town Monday’s chief cook and bottle washer. Travis is back after a hiatus, both planned and unplanned. Take a look over there for links to other My Town Monday Marauders. You’ll learn much and have fun, too.

Yes, it’s good. We’ll see what that groundhog has to say in just a few days. I can’t wait. We missed the snow this time around and I can’t say I’m sorry.

Wow! We only got about an inch…but I could hear so much more bird song too… sadly I think our girls are done laying and it’s time for new biddies.

We’re actually hoping for some snow here in Central Virginia. Between the mountains and the coast — it’s always a guess whether it’ll be snow or rain.

Rudeek reminded me! There is a groundhog hole in the bank by our gravel drive! I see a film project for the boys!

    Welcome back to Travis!

Hints of spring in Ohio…hmmmmm. Not a whisper about it here in Boston yet. We’ve got at least two feet of snow, unusual in that it’s lasted as long as it has. Bitter cold. We’re just trying to find ways to play outside and have fun with it. I’m not saying we’re succeeding but we are trying!!

COLD is the word! My HoneyHaired Grrrl is hoping for a snow day on Tuesday so I’m getting ready to put on my pj’s inside-out and backwards and send our request out to the universe. That or some sunshine. I’m not all that picky at this point:>)

My children would kill for six inches of snow. In fact, they’d be thrilled with just six snowflakes!

We got 6 inches today where I live in Utah — finally! Without winter storms, our air gets unbreathable (Utah cities usually among the worst 5 in the U.S.), and no one gets to ski. The mountain where I ski got 22 inches since Friday. I detested winter until I learned some winter sports (XC skiing is as awesome as downhill). Soups, stews and Chopin also help me a lot!

As soon as the holidays are over, I’m ready for Spring! I’m sick of snow and even sicker of shovelling.

That snow looks fantastic; lucky birds too to have such a caring neighbour with helping hands.

It should only snow in the woods.

Well, Travis, my layers have layers. This old house is hard to keep warm.

Rudeek,if the weather stays like this, I’d be surprised if the groundhog bothers to poke his head out!

we were in the itty bitty area that got dumped on, kelly. Maybe your chick a biddies will start laying when it gets a bit warmer. I’ll give you eggs when I see you :-)

Hey Laura—film on! Did you get any snow? We’re expecting cold and a bit more all week, I guess.

We took a walk in the woods last night, Cat. The snow was almost to my knees. Beautiful. Good exercise. C. O. L. D.

My #2 daughter looks forward to snowboarding on Tuesday, Annie. I hope the pj thing works.

If I could mail you a snowball, I would, Barrie. We still have one in the freezer from several years ago when #2 daughter made one that looked like a heart.

My daughters snowboard, Erin. I’ve never been interested in downhill skiing. (Our slopes are bunny bumps compared to yours.) XC skiing interests me. The quiet is my friend :-)

I’m tired of trudging, teeni. The next season here is mud.

The snow IS beautiful, Chris. We see so many kinds of birds. It really is wonderful.

Well, Patti, there is r-e-a-l-l-y a lot of snow in the woods here.

Yes, it is very good and very cold here. We have the18+ inches you spoke of, but we only had a trace of snow compared to the six inches that came down on you!

Isn’t this the type of winter reminiscent of childhood, Debra? And I enjoy the longer daylight!

Good luck with all that snow! And thanks for reminding me that winter is half over. We can make it! :)

That’s a lot of snow, but at least winter is half over and nature is “working its miracle”. Nicely put.

I noticed today that the evenings, afternoons really, are lengthening. Soon we will be able to go out without coats and hats!
