The Power of One: The Charter for Compassion

A few weeks ago, I wrote the following here:

We all really do live in the same town; it is called Planet Earth. We share the same air, drink the same water and look at the same blue sky. All of us gaze up at the same stars and are amazed by the same full moon.

We the people can solve problems that governments have caused; we the people can share our resources with our friends and neighbors—even those whom we do not know. We the people.

In this time where CHANGE is the buzzword of the day, we the people live it and do it. We are the change we wish to see in the world. Quietly, without the acrimony of politics. In our everyday life. One cup at a time

This morning, I came across The Charter for Compassion:

The Charter for Compassion is a collaborative effort to build a peaceful and harmonious global community. Bringing together the voices of people from all religions, the Charter seeks to remind the world that while all faiths are not the same, they all share the core principle of compassion and the Golden Rule. The Charter will change the tenor of the conversation around religion. It will be a clarion call to the world.

We have always been the change we wished to see in the world. Now we can see that others are joining us. One person at a time. The Power of One.

What a wonderful organization and I was encouraged to hear at the very end of the video that there was a reference to secular humanists as well. I think there’s a sort of preconception that non-believers are without a moral compass and in my experience, it’s simply not true. Thanks so much for posting this. It does feed my hope.

Wow, thanks for sharing this link. I feel so much compassion for the world, it’s closer to home that I struggle.

We can live in peace and harmony. I think a great shift is happening. Thanks, Debra.

If Only….True Humanity starts with True Compassion. Many people will have to put themselves in the other persons shoes in order for this to actaully happen on a world level. Right here in California, two organized religions spent over $22 million to take unalienable rights away from other people, pretty much saying, “you are less than”….Where is the Humanity and Compassion in that? And it is ALL about The Bible, and what the Bible supposedly says. Until Religions can let go of cettain dogmatic ideas, there cannot be this “One World”. Sad to say. Cause I sure wish it could happen. BUT, True Compassion is about understanding our differences an honoring them so that ALL people are equal, not just some.

As a “secular humanist” I applaud this type of effort.

I want to hug OldOldLady of the Hills. I have friends who were hurt by that Prop 8 vote.

I bounce around between UUs and Liberal Quakers and New Thought, finding things that speak to me.

Debra, have you read Eckhart Tolle? I finally picked up a copy of his latest book the other day, and I was intrigued by how he describes “the pain body”, and how it feeds itself.

We use Religion, as well as other thought forms and labels, to separate ourselves as individuals, as “better than”. It’s all an illusion, this “separateness”, because we are all one, and the separation is in our minds.

Isn’t the etomology of compassion something about suffering together (Latin com- and pati- suffer)or sharing suffering? Reminding us that we are one, no matter how hard we try to use Religion — or Not Religion — to divide us.

Oh, blah, blah, blah. Too early, too much coffee. :)

I agree with you wholeheartedly on the power of one, both in the world view and on a personal level.

The video was awesome. I’ll have to check out the charterforcompassion.com link.

By the way, I’ve got you back on my blogroll having lost the whole thing awhile back. It’s taken me awhile to recreate it.

Thanks for your kind comment over my way. In regards to this posting, I have heard somewhere that we can create peace by nurturing it in our own homes and radiating it outward from there. That seems such a small act in view of the world’s difficulties but, when I really thought about it, very mighty. Thanks.
