Why Buy Art?
Cathy Bennett answers the question clearly:
Why buy art?
-To lift your spirit
-To expand your spirit
-To meet your spirit
-To brighten your day
-To brighten your home
-To brighten your life
-To honor an artist
-To declare your value
-To have fun
-To know yourself
-To inspire yourself
-To inspire others
-To share your wealth
-To laugh
So many reasons.
Art feeds the spirit and soul; it brings light and life to being. Art can make your heart sing and your spirit soar. Something that comes from the heart through the hands. It is no accident that there is art in heART.
When you support an artist, you affirm the creative spirit. You have the opportunity to see the world in a different way, as the artist’s vision is manifested in the piece he or she has made.
Why do you buy art? What does art bring to your life?

Although I seldom buy art now, I used to buy it for a lot of the reasons you’ve listed. There is something special about something made by hand, something that is not just mass produced. Also, I was once an art major and I know how important it is to promote art. People will spend a lot for clothes, for cosmetics, electric appliances, etc., but hesitate to buy art, which they don’t think of as practical. Art may not be practical, but it greatly enhances one’s quality of life. I have a few drawings and vases from friends that give me pleasure every time I look at them.

Ah, Larramie, your comment makes me smile in a warm kind of way. Thanks.
Sherry, art does make your art sing! That’s also why you make art.
I don’t buy a lot of art either, Mary, but I always use functional art. It just f-e-e-l-s better to me. Knowing that an item is made by hand, one at a time, soothes my spirit.
You are so right about folks spending money on clothing, cosmetics, etc—things that adorn the self– as well as electronics. Is is because we live in a self-absorbed culture where everything must be immediate, I wonder?
