Good Times

Our 150ish year old post and beam bank barn was transformed into a fall/harvest/Halloween palace yesterday. Our daughter worked with 3 of her good friends to hang streamers from rafter to rafter, through the basketball hoop and around the posts. She scooted across the high chestnut beam that runs the width of this part of the barn, carefully hanging icicle lights. Other lights adorned different beams, and when they were plugged in: magic!

They finished their task and came into this old house to clean layers of barn dirt from their hands, and to prepare for the evening’s festivities. Then the rains came. No fire or s’mores this night; it was too wet to even consider finding dry wood. Music of all kinds filled the space. The warmth of a group of friends–about 15 of them, I think–having fun. Showing up in the house for food and hot cider, a few words to us “parentals,” and off they went to create their own fun.

Today is a day of barn clean up. Humidity isn’t generally kind to crepe paper streamers. It’s a quiet day in these parts; leaves gently falling, the rain alternating with sleet-like drizzle. Too tired to do much more than smile.

Oh what fun…I’m sorry it rained on their parade…but it sounds like they didn’t let that dampen their spirits and they partied anyway! You’re so right…humidity is NOT kind to streamers!! ;)

Sad-looking streamers know their party’s over, but there are still some golden days yet to be!

That sounds like a good Halloween party. We haven’t had ours yet, but we did go to a bonfire party the other night. The wind blew so hard that if everything hadn’t been so wet, the whole place would have gone up in flames. It was lovely to see all the kids roasting marshmallows in the fire, but I wish we could have had s’mores. No one here knows what they are, and I longed to introduce them to this American treat.

Your kids will remember that Halloween party for years to come. I still remember all of the ones I went to.

Sherry– The only thing that they were less than pleased about was being s’more-less!

Larramie–The streamers not only stretched to the ground, but the color transferred onto the old chestnut floor. Each time we look at the colors, we smile.

Mary– It was a lovely party, one they are still talking about. Do you have graham crackers over there, or would a care package be in order :-)

Thank you, Debra, but we do have something similar here: digestive biscuits! Personally, I think ‘graham crackers’ sound so much better. ‘Digestive biscuits’ sound like something the doctor would give you to help a queasy stomach. Amazingly, given the name, they taste great.

Oh, it’s been years since I’ve been to a good barn party! Sounds like they made the best of it. What fun.

They had a blast and are already planning the next event. No matter that the weather is changing–when you have the warmth of friendship, who needs more!
